Maybelline “Confidence” ads. SO happy with how the colors in these turned out in printing and matting. To clarify, these are not real Maybelline ads, they were created for an advertising class.

EDIT: This is important. This means a lot to me. I legitimately believe a huge mistake was made today.

These ads were a part of my portfolio into the advanced advertising program at my school. About half of the people who apply get in. I got into the first two creative classes, intro and intermediate, and I was confident I would get into advanced… especially after I posted these on tumblr and in a matter of a few hours got THOUSANDS of notes with people saying that they loved them, most people even believing they were real advertisements and not something a 21 year old student made for class.

The only reservation I had was that my portfolio was being judged by two older men. Two men who have never worn makeup in their lives. Two men who would probably not even begin to understand what this campaign means. Two men who have never been under societal pressures to wear makeup, but then being told they’re insecure for doing so.

Those reservations might have been founded, as evidenced by the fact that I did not get in. I was rejected. I got over 5,500 notes on these ads in 24 hours, yet I was rejected for not being good enough. I can’t finish the program, and I have to figure out where to go from here.

Now to the good stuff: Tumblr is amazing. Everyone who has reblogged this, whether your comments were negative or positive, is amazing. I find it truly astounding that these have gotten so much attention. These, which are advertisements selling you something, something people inherently dislike. I am humbled, shocked, and grateful. This is the first time since I’ve been in advertising that I felt like I was doing something right… that maybe, just maybe, I could make it in this industry and make a positive change.

Those dreams were squashed today. I cried, and I complained. I’m angry — but not at myself like I thought I would be. I feel they made a mistake. I refuse to believe that I’m in the bottom 50% of the people who applied. I deserve to be in that program, and I know it. Thousands of people can’t be wrong that this is a good idea. An idea that MEANS something, and idea that resonates with many people. 2 older, conventional men can absolutely be wrong when it comes to judging what makes a good makeup ad.

Here’s where you come in. Let’s make them regret their decision. Reblog this, like it, comment on it, whatever. Let’s get this attention… so much attention that they can’t ignore it. While the decisions are most likely final, I want to make them think twice. I want them to look back, and believe that they fucked up. If it doesn’t even benefit me personally, I want them to think about how fair a panel of 2 male judges is when it comes to evaluating work done by women, for an audience that consists of predominantly people who identify as women.

So let’s do this. They fucked up; I deserved to be accepted. I know it, and I have a feeling you guys know it too.

You DESERVED to get in. I’m a guy and I love these!

I love Angelic Pretty’s concept♥

To be read: Angelic Pretty provides adorable clothing covered in lace, frills, and ribbons like that of the fairytale princess you’ve dreamed of as a little girl. We want girls to never lose sight of that dream… This is a brand for girls who want to keep that dream alive (unless you’re fat, tall, busty, or anything other than Lolitas 1%).
Boycott AP.

The top photo is one of my favorites from the 2011 con-season! These pictures are of me and my little brother. He’s 5 years younger than me, but I’m 5’10” in bare feet and he’s 6’6”. I like standing next to him because he makes me look like a normally sized woman! XD

Photos by The Lady of Graves’.

Oh Miss Maude, you ARE a normally sized woman. Woman come in a myriad of beautiful shapes and sizes. *rainbow hands*

Anyways, I love this cosplay! Nerfpunk. I love it~~~

TBH I think a designer can release their clothes in whatever sizes they want. If they are selling dresses, great for them! Obviously AP are! Remember AP is a JAPANESE brand, they started out catering almost solely to Japanese girls who ARE naturally smaller than us, with less variation in size. Why do they need to change their business model because some overweight/tall/large chested girls in the west became interested in the style?! I don’t understand this sense of entitlement. Lolita clothing is an extremely niche market, brands can’t really afford to take the chance and have a lot of sizes that might not sell sitting around in their warehouses, hence it makes sense that they make one size ‘fits most’, because it will fit MOST Japanese girls - ie the girls that are going to walk into their store on a daily basis. Yes this is changing with greater interest from the west, and stores in the US and Europe, but it would still be a big leap and a gamble for them.

Plus I’m sorry but… what is wrong with being a healthy girl? Note she didn’t say ‘skinny’ or even ‘thin’, but healthy. I know girls can’t help being tall or big busted (speaking as a DD cup…) but as far as being overweight, you’ve done that to yourself and you can fix it too with a bit of self control and physical effort (60 pounds down… about 20 to go…). Why do big girls act like slim girls have done nothing to deserve or earn it, and they’ve done nothing to deserve being fat so the world owes them?! Put down the cupcake and go for a jog, urgh. Not all slimmer girls sit around on their asses eating candy and never get any bigger, some of us WORK to fit and look good in our clothes.

As for the price… clearly buyers of lolita don’t walk into other designer clothing stores very often because 155 euro? HAHA, that is not expensive for a designer dress.

that’s not the point. I know that. I lost 10 kilos to fit in and now I do. I did not wanted them to make bigger dresses for me, I understood the hint and lost weight.

and yeah, 155 is in fact megaawesome as a AP-price. but I didn’t know that back then. so that was what my OLD SELF said to Maki.

PLUS - the translator said “so don’t bigger sized girl will wear it, only healthy girls”, but I cut that out so Maki would not look like a complete bitch in the pic. I don’t wanna bash her, I adore the brand.

But saying bigger girls are not healthy, what she said backhanded, is not really fair. some people are larger and can’t help it.

Are we seriously still on this whole overweight/larger=unhealthy thing? It does not! There are plenty of genetic issues that cause people to be larger, and prevent them from losing weight. You can be 200 pounds and still be healthy. No one is saying there is anything wrong with being healthy, in fact, there is nothing wrong with it, but “healthy” is not the same body size or skinniness for everyone.

As for what Maki said, I still find that insulting. If they are going to sell to the western market, they should cater to them. It is not a sense of entitlement, it’s a sense of equal oppurtunity. Like you said, Japanese girls ARE smaller then the average westerner, and few westerners are that size. They are still really only offering their products to Japanese girls and very small western girls, and there is no equal oppurtunity. Whether you are heavy(which you may or may not be able to change), tall or large busted(neither of which you can really change without expensive and scarring surgery), you’re not getting a fair chance to be able to purchase these clothes. A desire for fair chance=/=feelings of self-entitlement.

And YES, it IS expensive. Maybe not for you, but plenty of other people. We don’t all have the same income and for many working people, 155Euro is impractical and not a frivolous luxury they can afford.

Of course brands can sell whatever sizes they want, but that doesn’t make the thinking behind it okay or any less insulting.

BLACK MARCHThursday, March 1st 2012 to Saturday 31st March 2012
With the continuing campaigns for Internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA and PIPA, and the closure of sites such as Megaupload under allegations of ‘piracy’ and ‘conspiracy’ the time has come to take a stand against music, film and media companies’ lobbyists.
The only way is to hit them where it truly hurts.Their profit margins.
March 2012 is the end of the 1st quarter in economic reports worldwide.
Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy, Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine.
Wait the 4 weeks to buy them in April: see the film later, etc. Holding out for just 4 weeks, maximum, will leave a gaping hole in media and entertainment companies’ profits for the 1st quarter, an economic hit which will in turn be observed by governments worldwide as stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes. This action can give a statement of intent:
”We will not tolerate the Media Industries’ lobbying for legistation which will censor the internet.”

I can totally do this! OuO
